Former Hibs right back David Van Zanten has signed for 1st division side Greenock Morton on a short term deal.

Van Zanten impressed as a trialist for Morton on Saturday against Partick Thistle, which prompted the Greenock side to pounce.

The 27-year-old Irishman was released by Hibs boss John Hughes in the summer, but up until now has failed to find a club.

Van Zanten has signed for James Grady’s side until January, to put himself in the shop window, in an attempt to attract a bigger club, at a higher level.

Morton boss Grady said:

"He wants to play at a higher level, which we understand, but we've got him until the fourth of January for now.

"Hopefully, we may get the opportunity to extend that to the end of the season. We want to bring players in who have ambitions to go higher."

Van Zanten signed for the Hibees on a pre-contract agreement and arrived last summer, but failed to hold down a regular place in the side.

He previously spent 5 years with St Mirren, and was also on the books of Celtic as a youngster.
