Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen has today insisted that young gun Steven Fletcher can lead the line for Scotland.

Fletcher, 21, has been called up to the Scotland squad for the crucial World Cup Qualifier with Norway, at Hampden next Saturday.

The young Hibees hitman already has one cap to his name, picked up against Croatia at Hampden last November, and he has also been included in Scotland manager George Burley's squad's for the games against the Czech Republic, Northern Ireland and Iceland.

Paatelainen now feels the £5m rated youngster can make the step up from U21 star player to permanent full international and stay there.

The Hibees boss said:

"It is great news that Steven has been called up - good for him. It is always a confidence booster for any youngster.

"I'm sure Steven will be delighted but I have not had the chance to speak to him about it. I am not surprised he is in because he works very hard at his game. He has started scoring goals again and hopefully that will continue.

"I believe Steven is ready to start for Scotland but my opinion does not count in this situation. It is George Burley who decides who is in the squad and not my position to pick and choose.

"But Steven has worked very hard for this. He is an excellent goalscorer and a very good striker, so why not?

"Regardless of whether or not he starts he will benefit from playing and training with the best players that Scotland has to offer and will get plenty from the experience.

"You always learn a thing or two when you play international football so this is a good opportunity for him."
