Hibs keeper Andy McNeil resigned to leaving Easter Road

Hibs goalkeeper Andy Mcneil has tonight revealed that the fully expects to leave Easter Road in the summer.

McNeil has been out-of-favour at the Hibees for a while and has admitted he thinks his time is up.

The 21-year-old former Southampton youngster arrived at the Hibees in 2005 and was in goals as the club lifted the 2007 Scottish League Cup at Hampden, after a 5-1 win over Kilmarnock, has revealed his frustration at not playing.

McNeil said:

"I think I have realised you can't hang around for too long in places. From my experience, I have known a lot of players that have hung around too long maybe out of false promises or being in a comfortable position. You end up going back a bit.

"I don't want to be in that situation, I want to keep moving forward and getting better and if that means I have to go elsewhere that is the way it is.

"I think when the manager brings in eight goalkeepers on trial in the space of six months and is in the paper saying he is looking to bring in experience, the writing is on the wall.

"I have come in and done well and been dropped twice, you would have to be an idiot to think you had a real long-term future at the club. That's the way it is sometimes, people have different ideas about what they want and what they require from players and sometimes you don't fit into that mould.

"It is disappointing not to get a run of games. I played at the end of last season and played really well. I did what was asked and I kind of expected to carry on from there this season.

"I didn't play in the first Intertoto Cup game at the start of the season and I was very disappointed in that. Yves then went to the Olympics and I had a chance to play in the first couple of games of the season and again I felt I did really well.

"I made big saves in games and I thought I was doing well. I then picked up an injury against Morton and I got dropped and I thought, 'For what?'. "It was the same last time, I played a few weeks ago when Yves got injured and got dropped again.

"It's frustrating because I work really hard and I don't feel that Yves is a better goalkeeper than I am, I think he is good."

McNeil feels he has been unfairly treated due to the mistakes made by former goalkeepers Zibi Malkowski and Simon Brown.

He added:

"I only made a couple of mistakes in a small space of time, it's going back two seasons now. I was grateful for the opportunity at Hibs although generally the circumstances were not ideal with the fact that Zibi and Simon had taken a lot of flak in the media and from fans. I like responsibility and you can't play in goal without having responsibility."

Hibs are looking to bring in an experienced keeper, and former Dundee Utd goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski played in a closed door game with Dundee last night.

McNeil has played 35 games for the Hibees and has been capped at U18, U19 and U21 at international level for Scotland.
