Time to start playing for the jersey

This not an easy time to be a Hibee.

Four games, four defeats. Keepers asking for transfers, others reputedly gesturing to the fans, little transfer activity etc etc etc. You all know what I mean.

Garry O'Connor
Hoping to be playing in a different shade of blue
Then of course we have Mr Garry O'Connor. It's been said that the laddie has been quite vocal on the subject of him moving to Rangers, Southampton and the like over the summer, in some of the city's drinking establishments.

Then today in the papers he goes public with the fact that he would love to sign for Rangers, think's he's ready, and that the club were 'wrong' to let Craig Brewster go as he had such a good striking relationship with him.

WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS?

He's a promising young guy who scored a few goals at the tail end of last season. Does that qualify him to start gibbering about who we should and should not employ? Not in my eyes. Does it mean he can start giving it yahoo in the media about wanting to play for another club? No. No way. What gets me even more people, is that if this was a 30 something foreigner saying this I would probably think 'Typical. Using us as a stepping stone'. No. He's a Scot. A young Scot, who should be grateful for the fact that he's playing top team football in the first place. He's NOT the finished article, in my view Kenny Miller was a better prospect - and while yes, he DID jump ship to Ibrox, he didn't publically state he wanted that move before any other news on it went public.

And I think that's what's wrong with us theses days. There are hardly any players playing for the jersey any more. I think we only have three at the moment - Ian Murray, Grant Brebner, and Tam McManus. I'm not belittling the majority of the other guys who DO try 100% every game, and do have feeling for the club, or the younger players who haven't really broken through yet, but these 3 are the only ones out of the first team regulars that I think would run through a brick wall for Hibs. And that worries me.

Just think back a few years and you'll be able to name plenty 'real' Hibees who
Hibs Masters
REAL Hibees
would go that extra yard for the club. I'll tell you what, to make it easier, just look at the players who are playing in the masters in Manchester next month. You'll see guys you want, naw, guys you NEED at times like this. Paul Kane, Yogi Hughes, Gordon Rae, Eddie May, Mickey Weir. All guys that when you're down, they'll be the ones shaking their fists "Come on! Intae thum!" Clapping their hands to gee the other players up - getting fans and players alike to up the tempo to get that goal.

What I wouldn't give to have a younger Yogi Hughes and Gordon Rae at the back right now. Guys that can lead the team. Inspire all their teammates. Shout till they've lost their voices. True Hibees.

O'Connor, you can go for all I care. We don't need players like you, spouting nonsense about playing for our rivals while we're anchored at the bottom and looking for solidarity. Go on, go to Ibrox. Think you'll get your game every week? Did Miller? Naw.

Give me 'old school' Hibees any day of the week. Then we'll be all right.
