Saturday's defeat at Dundee United saw them lose the top-three spot they have held for virtually the whole campaign.
Hughes believes Hibs are still ahead of where he thought they would be when he took charge of his boyhood idols in the summer.
But he insists their inconsistency remains a serious cause of concern for him.
He said: "We've all been together for seven months; I've talked about the culture we're trying to create, a winning culture.
"You'll still probably see me at this moment in time in the dugout shouting and bawling.
"What you try to work towards as a manager is that you're cool, calm, collected.
"You put your head on the pillow on a Friday night, you go to sleep.
"You wake up on the Saturday morning and you know what you're going to get.
"I'm still working very hard towards that, trying to keep working them, tactically, so we know what we're going to get."
He added: "We've really worked hard for the first half of the season so it would be disappointing if we just let that dwindle away."
Hibs were beaten 1-0 at Tannadice last time out and Hughes is looking for a response when Hamilton travel to Easter Road this weekend.
"Every team has a wee bit of a dip and the only way to rectify that is to get back to winning ways on Saturday," he said.
"That will not be easy against a Hamilton team I've got great respect for.
"I've got a soft spot for Hamilton because they always seem to be fighting against it.
"All through that, they produce young players and they play some right good football, and they have proved a lot of their doubters wrong."
Hamilton are in the middle of a hectic schedule and played extra-time at Rangers in the Active Nation Scottish Cup on Tuesday night, their third meeting with the Scottish champions in nine days.
Hughes is not expecting fatigue to play a part on Saturday.
"I very much doubt that - I wouldn't get taken in by that," he said of opponents whose victory over Hibs in November inspired their recent 12-match unbeaten SPL run.
"Hamilton will probably go for a couple of days' rest - as long as they're not carrying any injuries and knock - and they'll come to Easter Road confident from their last three performances against the Scottish champions.
"The last time we played them, they battered us and thoroughly deserved their victory."
Hibs will be without Merouane Zemmama, who has a grade one hamstring tear but should be fit for Wednesday night's trip to Celtic.
The same applies to goalkeeper Graham Stack, who is back in light training after his troublesome back injury.
