Dundee Utd linked with Hibs striker Christian Doidge

According to the Daily Record, Dundee United are interested in signing Hibs striker Christian Doidge.

The big Welsh striker, 30, has just returned from a season long loan spell with Kilmarnock, having played 29 games and scoring 3 goals.

Doidge signed for the Hibees in a £300,000 deal from Forest Green Rovers back in 2019, and had a couple of productive seasons for the club, as he was teamed up with Kevin Nisbet and Martin Boyle in a free-scoring front three.

However, he picked up a horror achilles injury, and then suffered from long-covid, and found his chances limited and goals hard to come by at Easter Road, leading to his Killie loan last season.

Doidge has started pre-season well however, scoring twice as Hibs come from behind to beat Edinburgh City 2-4 on Saturday.

The report claims that Jim Goodwin would like to take him to Tannadice to spearhead United's promotion push from the Championship, and with Hibs interested in Dundee United midfielder Dylan Levitt, he could become a "makeweight" in the deal.

United are reported to want £500,000 for Levitt and Hibs have apparently been in discussions, but no deal has been done yet.

The Hibees have already splashed out £500,000 on Elie Youan, and another player at that fee could push their budget, however with £2.2m coming in for Kevin Nisbet, the rest of the Josh Doig cash coming from Verona from the original £3.2m fee, AND an expected  27.5% sell-on fee as Verona are expected to sell Doig to Torino for a reported £6m in the coming days, Hibs will still have cash to spend.

Will Hibs use Doidge as a way to bring the Levitt fee down?

HIBS-MAD VIEW

If United are interested, we can see this happening.

Hibs have already spent money on Eli Youan, Jojo Wollacott and Jordan Obita this transfer window, so are not afraid to spend if they have to.

We have sold Porteous, Doig and Nisbet over the last year, so should have decent cash reserves, and with a seven figure fee expected from Doig's sell-on it should be boosted even further.

However with rumours that we will be paying six figures to re-sign former loan players Will Fish and big Mykola Kuharevich still swirling about, the need to get the Levitt fee down is understandable.
