Hibs close to Whittaker signing

The Scottish Sun are tonight reporting that Hibs are close to signing former defender Steven Whittaker.

Hibs are said to have beaten off interest from capital rivals Hearts, and boss Neil Lennon is set to secure his fourth summer signing.

Whittaker, 32, is a free agent after leaving Norwich City during the summer and is apparently keen on a return to Easter Road.

Lennon has already signed Danny Swanson (St Johnstone), Simon Murray (Dundee Utd) & Efe Ambrose (Celtic) this summer.

Whittaker came through Hibs youth system, and played  174 games, scoring 5 goals in his first stint in Leith.

He was also part of the Hibees "golden generation" that went on to win the 2007 Scottish League Cup, later in 2007, he joined Rangers in a £2m deal.

Whittaker lasted 5 years at Ibrox, winning 3 league titles, 2 Scottish Cups & 2 League Cups and also played in Uefa Cup Final in 2009, before signing for Norwich City on a free transfer after Rangers were liquidated in 2012, having made 209 appearances and scoring 28 goals.

He spent the last 5 years with Norwich, gaining promotion through the play-offs in 2015, he made 109 appearnaces for the Carrow Road club, scoring 7 times.

Whittaker has been capped 31 times by Scotland.
