Hibs defender Kevin McCann told he can go

Last updated : 22 April 2011 By Steve Forbes

Hibs defender Kevin McCann has today become the latest player to be told he has no future at Easter Road.

The 23-year-old is finally fit again, following almost 3 years on the sidelines, but Colin Calderwood hasn't featured him since his return.

McCann is just back from his latest knee injury, one that he picked up while on loan with fellow SPL side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The player has had a torrid time with injury over the years, since breaking through the famous youth system at Easter Road, and making his SPL debut against Aberdeen.

Tendonitis in his knee caused him a number of problems, that caused him to break down on a number of ocassions.

McCann, who is one of only two surviving members of the Hibees 2007 CIS Cup winning side (the other being Lewis Stevenson), is resigned to the fact he is on his way out.

He said:

"I'm fit now and training hard so I'll just have to wait and see what happens this summer," said McCann in the Daily Record.

"I'm out of contract at the end of the season and I'm just keeping myself fit to try to get a contract somewhere. I've not spoken to anyone at Hibs but I haven't had any chances and I really need to start playing football again.

"I wanted to try to finish this season on a real high but I've not been given the opportunity to do that.

"I've not heard from anyone at Easter Road but I have to look after myself, so I've been speaking to my agent to see what opportunities are there for me.

"People keep asking me if I'm fit and I don't want other clubs to think I'm not fit when I am."

Hibs boss Colin Calderwood has already told a number of players they can leave the club.

Merouane Zemmama (Middlesbrough), Sol Bamba (Leicester City), Chris Hogg (ICT), Jonathan Grounds (Middlesbrough) and Lee Currie (Free) all left the club in January.

Graeme Smith, Colin Nish, Vladas Trakys, Kurtis Byrne, John Rankin, Kevin McBride, Ewan Moyes, Thomas Flynn and now McCann have all been told they are free to go in the summer when their contracts expire.

Steven Thicot, Daryll Duffy, Graham Stack are amongst others who's futures are under threat down Leith.

Mcann only managed 35 appearances and 2 goals, in a nightmare, injury ravaged, 5 years with the club.

Hibernian-Mad would like to take this oppertunity to wish Kevin all the very best for the future.

His contribution towards the 2007 League Cup triumph will never be forgotten.
