Hibs eye move for Wigan midfielder Jamie McGrath

Last updated : 03 April 2023 By Steve Forbes

According to Alan Nixon on his patreon site, Hibs are chasing the signing of Wigan Athletic player Jamie McGrath, currently on loan with Dundee Utd in the Premiership.

McGrath, 26, will enter the last year of his current contract with the relegation threatened League One side and they will be keen to lower their wage bill should they go down.

Hibs of course failed with a last minute move for McGrath on transfer deadline day in January 2022, when he was at St Mirren, with the deal only falling through when the club failed to get the paperwork finalised in time.

The Hibees had an offer of £350,000 plus Scott Allan and Drey Wright accepted by the Paisley club at the time.

Hibs boss Lee Johnson will now fight it out with Fleetwood Town, managed by ex Hibs player Scott Brown, this summer to land the attacking midfielder.

Wigan, of course, are manged by former Hibs boss Shaun Maloney.

McGrath has previously played for St Pat's and Dundlak in his homeland, as well as St Mirren and has been capped 7 times by the Republic of Ireland.

HIBS-MAD VIEW:

If Hibs can get McGrath back to his form in Paisley he would be a brilliant signing.

He struggled with the move to Wigan, and hasn't been at his best for Dundee United, which considering how bad the Tannadice side are, is to be expected.

Hibs could probably pick him up for a small fee if Wigan are relegated and need to get players off their wage bill to sofgten the nlow of relegation.

We watch this one with interest.
