Hibs have today handed young defender Scott Smith a new deal with the club.

The 20-year-old left back has signed a new 1-year-deal with the Hibees and will now look to break into the first team.

Smith has only made 1 appearance in a green and white shirt, impressing against Berwick Rangers as Hibs ran out 5-0 winners in the League Cup last season.

He was then farmed out on loan to Brechin City for the rest of the season, playing 12 games for the Glebe Park side.

Smith has also been capped at U16, U17 and U19 for Scotland, and was part of the Hibees treble winning U19 side of 2009.

Speaking to the official club website, the youngster said:

“I’m delighted to have signed another contract and I’m looking forward to the new season.

“My mindset will be the same as it is every year, working as hard as I can. Hopefully then I can catch the manager’s eye and if I get presented with the opportunity I can take it with both hands. It’s a challenge I’m excited about. Last season was a step-up.

"I learned a lot from going out on loan to Brechin and playing regular first-team football. It was definitely beneficial.”

Hibs boss Pat Fenlon added:

“Scott has been in and around the first team for a year now and he has got a fantastic attitude and wants to succeed.

“He fits in with the type of player we want at the club moving forward.”
