Hibs full back David Murphy is thought to be the subject of an enquiry from English Premiership side Wigan Athletic.

The players agent, Willie McKay (who else?), has insisted that the Latics are keen on the Hibees fan favourite.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce is a huge admirer of the classy left back and it now seems he is the first, of what's likely to be many, to declare an interest in the player.

Bruce was said to be keen on taking him to
Birmingham City before he left St Andrews a few months ago to take over the Wigan hot seat.

Hibs are thought to be looking for AT LEAST £2m for Murphy, who has been the Hibees most consistent player over the last four years since joining from
Middlesbrough on a free transfer in the summer of 2004.

Wigan are expected to face MASSIVE competition from a number of clubs. Only three weeks ago Murph was watched by TEN clubs as he scored a cracker against Celtic at Parkhead in a 1-1 draw.

Birmingham City, Rangers, Blackburn Rovers, West Brom, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, West Ham, Everton, Fulham and Wolves all had him watched against Celtic (who are also interested!) and left the game impressed after a cracking performance from the best full back in the SPL.

His agent McKay said:

"I understand Wigan have made an enquiry to Hibs for David Murphy,"

"Steve Bruce is a big fan of David's and we will see what happens with the enquiry."

Bad news for a Hibs support still reeling from the departure of boss John Collins and a number of key players in the summer.

The only bit of good news is the number of sides interested could start a bidding war - to the Hibees advantage.

Let's hope we can stave off any bids, at least until the summer anyway.
