Dons boss Steve Paterson handed youth team players John Stewart and Ryan O'Leary their first starts in what must be one of the youngest starting elevens ever seen at Pittodrie.

Visitors Hibernian were able to bring in experienced trio Yannick Zambernardi, Grant Brebner and Mathias Doumbe following injury.

After a very scrappy opening ten minutes it was Hibs who should have opened the scoring when Reid skipped through the Dons defence leaving Richard Buckley and Kevin Rutkiewicz in his wake. But from 12 yards out his right-foot shot was too close to Ryan Esson who blocked, with Scott Morrison on hand to complete the clearance.

At the other end, both Markus Heikkinen and Scott Muirhead, twice came close with efforts outside the area.

In 28 minutes Dons babe Stewart passed up a glorious opportunity to open the scoring when Heikkinen and Paul Sheerin combined, to release him inside the area but Daniel Andersson reacted very quickly to charge off his line and block the ball away to safety.

Aberdeen began the second half in lively fashion, going close again on 48 minutes, Morrison's free-kick into the area found it's way to young O'Leary whose header had 'goal' written all over it until Andersson acrobatically clawed the ball away.

It was the home side who were very much in the ascendancy at this time and in quick succession Heikkinen and Stewart's shots were saved by Andersson, the latter's effort falling into the path of Bryan Prunty, however Gary Caldwell cleared the ball off the line with his goalkeeper beaten.

Andersson again did brilliantly on 61 minutes to parry Richard Foster's 20-yard effort away at the expense of a corner after the youngster had turned inside Zambernardi.

As the game entered the last quarter, Aberdeen introduced Murray McCulloch and Michele Lombardi in place of Man of the Match Heikkinen and Richard Foster.

The visitors almost stole the points on 87 minutes when Caldwell's deep cross was knocked back across the area by Reid, the ball falling to Garry O'Connor who somehow screwed his header off target with the goal at his mercy.

The goal was only delayed for a further three minutes when O'Connor latched onto a long through ball to hold off Rutkiewicz, before drilling the ball home from 18 yards out despite the valiant efforts of Esson.
