Aberdeen recorded their best win of the season as they overwhelmed Hibs 4-0 to move up to fifth in the table.

Whilst it would be their attacking performance that grabbed most of the headlines, the home side have only conceded one goal now in their last FBL outings.

Aberdeen forced an early chance when Russell Anderson intercepted a Derek Riordan pass to surge into the visitors half, picking out Jamie Smith who worked a clever one-two with Stevie Crawford before knocking the ball wide to Richard Foster, whose first-time cross found the head of Gary Dempsey. However the midfielder's flying header was brilliantly touched over by Zbigniew Malkowski.

Aberdeen took the lead which their outfield playdeserved in the 15th minute. Anderson headed a Barry Nicholson corner goalwards to find Crawford, who helped the ball home from four yards.

The home side kept up the pressure with strikers Crawford and Steve Lovell combining well after 18 minutes, the latter forcing a save out of Malkowski.

At the other end former Don Stephen Glass picked out Steven Fletcher at the edge of the area, but the youngster's tame effort was comfortably held by James Langfield.

With Aberdeen well on top the visitors showed just how dangerous they could be on the break after 25 minutes. Jay Shields' deep cross was headed out of the box by Anderson, the ball falling to Derek Riordan whose 20-yard volley crashed off the crossbar.

Aberdeen extended their lead after 30 minutes when Nicholson intercepted a weak David Murphy clearance to pick out Steve Lovell, who neatly side-stepped away from Gary Caldwell before passing the ball into the net from 14 yards.

Aberdeen almost paid the penalty for slack play by Alexander Diamond after 45 minutes. Riordan dispossessed the full-back before playing the ball into the area for Steven Fletcher to stab the ball home, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside.

Dons' striker Steve Lovell scored his 10th goal of the campaign when he smashed home a Diamond cross from 10 yards after 54 minutes.

Then Lovell picked out Foster who was given the freedom of the visitors' box before driving the ball home from 16 yards in the 64th minutes.

Hibernian almost pulled a goal back after 76 minutes when substitute Paull Dalglish climbed above the Dons defence to meet a Riordan corner only for the ball to cannon off the underside of the bar and away to safety.
