It was honours even in a dreary goalless draw at Love Street. Hibs played with three strikers in an enterprising move from Mixu Paatelainen but consequently they lost the midfield battle and couldn't supply their sharp-shooters.

St Mirren squandered the best chance through Dennis Wyness but were content to get bodies behind the ball as they stifled the game and were happy to try their luck from long distance.

It was Saints who started brightly and an early error from Yves Ma-Kalambay gave Billy Mehmet a half-chance as he reached Hugh Murray's throughball before the big keeper. However, Sol Bamba bailed out Ma Kalambay as he got back to mop up the danger.

But Garry Brady kept the visitors on the back foot with a 20-yarder that Ma-Kalambay held before Fabian Yantorno's ambitious effort from a tight angle was deflected wide.

Hibs hit back with a neat move and Steven Fletcher's pass was cleverly dummied by Derek Riordan but John Rankin's effort from 15 yards was woeful and trundled through to Mark Howard.

The Saints keeper made another routine save from Riordan's 25-yard free-kick as Hibs began to impose themselves on the game.

Riordan picked out Dean Shiels with a fine 50-yard pass and only a wonderful last-ditch challenge from Jack Ross prevented the Irishman firing Hibs in front.

Bamba felt the full impact of Franco Miranda's long-range effort and then Mehmet's attempted curler presented Ma-Kalambay with a comfortable save.

But the Hibs keeper had to work harder to push a powerful 25-yarder from Miranda around the post as the Saints full-back enjoyed his freedom down the left.

Hibs finally got Riordan in on goal after 52 minutes as he ran on to a cute Shiels pass but from a tight angle the striker's shot was blocked by Mark Howard and Saints escaped.

But Saints were far from out of it and Ross wasn't too far away from 25 yards before only a fine interception from Ian Murray prevented Mehmet from nodding home Miranda's tempting cross.

And Wyness passed up the best chance of the game when Hugh Murray's deep cross found him in space. Wyness pulled the ball down but his close-range effort lacked power and Ma-Kalambay blocked with his long legs.

Hibs came back through Riordan's 25-yarder which was held by Howard and then Shiels was only inches away from the edge of the box as he latched on to Fletcher's header.

And Howard got his fingertips to substitute Yantorno's right-foot shot late on to ensure that the points were shared.
