Hibs revealed this afternoon that legendary defender Darren McGregor will retire at the end of the season.
The 37-year-old played this last season with the development squad, who won the SPFL reserve league, along with a coaching role, but he has now decided to hang up his boots for good.
McGregor joined the Hibees from Rangers back in 2015, and went on to play 188 games for the club, scoring 8 goals.
He was part of the Hibees 2016 Scottish Cup winning side, and also the squad that gained promotion back to the Premiership 12 months later.
The good news is, Darren has signed a new contract with the club and will be U18 head coach from next season.
Speaking to the official club website, Daz said:
“It has been an absolute privilege to live my dream of playing for Hibs. It has been an honour to play for the Club that I have grown up supporting all my life and I am so thankful to have been given that first opportunity at the age of 30.
“I never imagined going on to have the career that I have had and to win the Scottish Cup was just the pinnacle.
“This last year has been really beneficial for me to make that gradual transition from playing to coaching and I have learned a lot from the likes of Gareth, Steve and a lot of the other coaches here at the Club.
“Now, I am delighted to be able to stay at the Club and take that next step in my career - helping to develop the next generation of future First Team players through coaching the U18s next season.”
Hibs-Mad View:
Sad too see Darren hang up the boots, but it's been coming, he's 37 now and been a brilliant player for us.
He goes down a legend, it's great to see him stay with the club and pass his wisdom down to the kids.
The role with the kids last season, let's hope it continues.
