Hibs sign Sunderland defender Nectarios Triantis on loan

Hibs have confirmed their first signing of transfer deadline day, with the capture of Sunderland defender Nectarios Triantis.

The Australian central defender has signed for the Hibees on loan for the rest of the season.

6ft 3in Triantis signed for Sunderland in the summer in a £300,000 deal, after leaving Aussie Champions Central Coast Mariners - then managed by Hibs boss Nick Montgmery.

However he has found game time hard to come by, playing only 3 times, despite being involved in most match day squads.

He has been capped at U20 and U23 by the socceroos.

Speaking to the official club website, Hibs boss Nick Montgomery said:

“Nectar is a young player that I know very well from my time in Australia. I signed him for the Mariners and gave him his A-League debut as I saw huge potential in him.

“He was a mainstay in our Championship winning team before joining Sunderland in the summer. Although he might not have played much this summer, when he has featured, he’s performed well.

“We have been chasing Nectar for some time, and although we thought he’d remain at Sunderland, circumstances changed last night, and we made a move to bring him to Hibs.

“I’m really happy to bring Nectar to the Club and look forward to him meeting the players at HTC. He adds to the quality we’ve already brought in during this window.”

HIBS-MAD VIEW

It's good to finally get a central defender through the door.

He looks like what we've been missing, a big commanding player, who can play a bit, at the back.

This looks like another shrewd signing for Hibs this window, which has been a really good window.

Welcome to Hibees Nectar!
